假如：你在牛津大學讀了學士學位，歸國後清華大學認為你無需從講師做起，可連升兩級，直接擔當教授，你當了一年教授，收到父親來信，說：快來師範學院當系主任，我身體不行了，你來接班，順便來照顧我。你是一個孝順的人，縱然心中不願，也不想違背父親意志，遂決定辭去清華的教授，去師範當系主任。
再假如：你現在不是這個牛津學士了，你是他的配偶，深知這不是一個明智的決定，你會怎麼做？
大多數人想來都不會贊成這個決定，所以多數人的選擇是據理力爭，試圖說服配偶改變主意。楊絳先生也是這麼想的。
沒錯，這是錢鍾書夫妻倆的真實故事。楊絳深以為這決定不正確，想要爭執一番，但她有個習慣，凡事喜歡和自己父親商量一下，看看父親的態度。她把這事一說，父親卻沒有發表任何意見，只沉默不語。楊絳是個愛動腦子的，她看著父親沉默的臉，一番思索後，也決定沉默。於是在這件事情上，她沉默到底，沒有給錢鍾書任何壓力，隨他做選擇。
後來錢鍾書去了湖南藍田當系主任了，隨後幾年的經歷也證明這個選擇是非常錯誤的。因為清華破格提拔了錢鍾書，他卻只幹一年就辭了，因此觸怒了“葉先生”，即便兩年後錢鍾書後悔，想重回清華，清華也沒再聘用他。後來岳父把自己在上海的教職轉給了錢鍾書，他才算謀了生計，一干就是八年。
楊絳先生當時選擇沉默，那她是如何說服自己的呢？她想，一個人的去處是一輩子的大事，當由自己抉擇，別人只能陳說別人的道理，不該干預。
看似非常簡單的道理，但知難行易。能忍住心中的不滿，也能拋開意識中的對錯，去執行這樣的道理，楊絳先生給我們打了個樣。
不要把自己的意志強加給別人，即便自己說的萬分正確。每個人的人生需要自己走完，每一個決定應由自己去選擇，外人無權干預。因為我們的道理再對，也只是我們的，不是他的。
對配偶，對孩子，對父母，甚至對朋友，我們要守住分寸，不要越界。可以商量，也可以給意見，但不要強迫。

Here is a fence。Under the fence is a stile。It is crooked too。Upon the stile is a coin。The coin is crooked。Yes，they are both twisted and crooked。Here is a question。What is the stile for？Oh，the stile helps the old man climb over the fence。
The old man buys a cat with that crooked coin。They go back home，where the cat catches a mouse who is also crooked。
Look at this house。Is it straight？No。It is a crooked house with a crooked chimney。
Time to eat。The old man cooks a crooked fish。
The cat smells the fish。The cat grabs the fish and runs away。
The old man chases the cat。
The cat hides。The old man looks for the cat。He could not find the cat。
Then the old man smells the fish。
He follows the smell into a shed。The shed looks crooked too。
Inside the shed is a sack。Upon the sack are several kittens。Kittens are baby cats。These baby cats are eating the fish happily。Where is mommy cat？Here，she is right beside these kittens。
