Germany's electrical industry expects to make up for COVID-19 production losses in 2021

BERLIN, June 10 (Xinhua) —— Germany‘s electrical industry is expecting to fully make up for last year’s production losses in 2021, the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers‘ Association (ZVEI) announced on Thursday。

Price-adjusted production in April increased by 26。8 percent year-on-year, according to ZVEI。 Compared to pre-crisis levels in 2019, the electrical industry’s output was almost five percent up。

After recording a six-percent decline in production last year, the industry association raised its production forecast for 2021 by three percentage points to eight percent given the recent developments。

New orders in April also recovered and were up 57 percent year-on-year, according to ZVEI。 In April last year, the industry saw orders drop by one-fifth as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic。

Exports increased by 3。4 percent year-on-year to 54。2 billion euros (66 billion U。S。 dollars) in the first quarter of 2021, according to the latest ZVEI figures。 Exports to China, the industry‘s largest trading partner, and Poland, which ranks fourth among the most important export countries, recorded double-digit growth。

Despite the improvements, some risks remain in the upcoming months。 “The biggest challenge at the moment is the shortage of materials and logistical problems such as delays in the supply chain,” said ZVEI chief executive officer Wolfgang Weber in a statement。 (1 euro = 1。22 U。S。 dollars) Enditem
